Poem - Time to Time

Seeing his face one last time

Hearing his breaths with a rhyme

“I’m going, wait for me.”

The last words she had kept in mind

From April to July

Day by day

She counted with the daisy petals

Winds and grass became her only friends

To waste time with until he comes

One month had passed

Goodbye July, hello August

The white gardenia had faded

She landed on the bed with a thud

Still wondering when he would come

The silence inside became a fantasia

The thoughts brought her to a siesta

The summer greeted the autumn

Leaves falling, streets full of reds

Still, he hadn’t come

The loneliness had become a symptom

Slowly, a shadow walked towards the gate

Sensing that, she left the boiling pot

Not caring what could happen next

It wasn’t him, not her man

It was someone else’s

The sunflowers were replaced by falling leaves

The sun was replaced by clouds

Still, her heart wasn’t replaced by anything

Days after days, months after months

Still, he hadn’t come

The story of this poem is about a woman whose husband had to go to the war from April. Every day, she waited for him, until Autumn came. Even until then, he hadn't come. At the end of the poem, she thought that the shadow of a man walking to the direction of her house was her husband, however, he was her neighbor's husband.

I was inspired by the books that I've read in my school for ORP (Outside Reading Project). Mainly, the books that I read were history-related books, resulting in me gaining more knowledge about how life was during the time of wars.

The books that I read (that were based on historical events) were 'When My Name was Keoko' by Linda Sue Park and 'A World between Us' by Lydia Syson.

While making this poem, I was trying to work on my rhymes and the fancy vocabularies at some points.

My favorite lines were:

The silence inside became a fantasia

The thoughts brought her to a siesta

I also tried to emphasize how she had been waiting and how he hadn't come after a long period of time.
